The Bloemgracht (Flower Canal) is one of the most beautiful and well-known canals in Amsterdam, named after one of the city’s former fortifications - the “Bulwark de Bloem.” The canal was built at the beginning of the 17th century and connects the Prinsengracht with the Lijnbaansgracht.
It is located in the famous and touristic Jordaan neighborhood and is considered the most beautiful canal in the area. From its very beginning, it became an important center in Dutch culture and history, as the famous Atlas Maior was created here by the mapmaking house of Willem Jansz Blaeu, his son Joan Blaeu, and his grandson. The famous artist Rembrandt also worked along the canal, and important factories and merchants operated here from its earliest days.
The canal contains five bridges, including the Atlasbrug and the Kees de Jongenbrug, the latter located right across from the Anne Frank House. Today it serves mainly as an upscale residential area with many restaurants, galleries, and unique boutique shops.
