Brouwersgracht is one of the most famous canals in Amsterdam and, according to many locals and tourists, the most beautiful of them all. Its name means “Brewers’ Canal,” named after the many breweries that operated in the area at the end of the 16th century. The canal itself was dug only in the 17th century, but the name remained from the area.
Brouwersgracht connects the Singel with the Singelgracht and also forms the northern boundary of the Jordaan neighborhood. It is a canal you definitely do not want to miss during a city tour, and almost every canal cruise you take will pass through it. The street along the canal is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful streets in Amsterdam.
Along the canal, you can find several famous bridges such as Papiermolensluis, Lekkeresluis, and Melkmeisjesbrug. In addition, important figures in Dutch history and culture, such as the cartographer Isaak de Graaf, the painter Siep van den Berg, and the actress Katja Schuurman, lived there.
