The Groenburgwal is a well-known and particularly picturesque canal in Amsterdam that connects the Raamgracht with the Amstel River. Its name means “Green Canal,” named after the green cloth merchants who once operated in the area. The canal was an integral part of trade during Amsterdam’s Golden Age.
It is considered one of the most beautiful canals in Amsterdam, with some claiming it to be the most beautiful of all. In 1874, Claude Monet painted his famous work The Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam (Looking up the Groenburgwal), depicting his view toward the Zuiderkerk tower.
