The Herengracht (Lords’ Canal) is one of the four main canals of Amsterdam’s canal belt (Grachtengordel) and is considered a famous canal and a well-known tourist attraction in the city. Its name comes from the “Heren Regeerders,” the ruling lords of the city.
Along the canal are some of the most beautiful houses in Amsterdam, some of which have been turned into museums such as the Bartolotti Museum House, the KattenKabinet, the Geelvinck-Hinlopen Museum, the Hendrikje Museum of Bags and Purses, and the Willet-Holthuysen Museum.
It is highly recommended to explore the canal both on foot along its length and on a canal cruise that passes through it.
