The Keizersgracht (Emperor’s Canal) is one of the most famous and beautiful canals in Amsterdam’s renowned canal belt (Grachtengordel). The canal is named after Emperor Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor.
The Keizersgracht is the widest canal in central Amsterdam (about 28 meters), and along it you can find notable houses and landmarks such as Huis met de Hoofden, Coymanshuis, Felix Meritis, De Claes Reinierszhofje, The Dylan Hotel, Keizersgrachtkerk, Museum Van Loon, Huis Marseille, and the Nieuwe Waalse Kerk.
Over the years, important figures in Dutch culture and history lived along the canal, including the painter Ferdinand Bol, the poet and historian P.C. Hooft, and even John Adams - the second president of the United States, who resided on the canal while serving as ambassador to the Netherlands.
Today it is one of the best-known canals in Amsterdam and a tourist attraction that draws millions of visitors from around the world. It is highly recommended to explore it on a canal cruise that sails directly through the canal.
